theytake

the"slave-king"phenomenon
puzzlestherestofthe
world,it
repre-sentsthelogicalculminationof
military
slavery(ifnotitsin-tended
result)andmarksthe
final
stepinthe
transformationofthe
militaryslave
fromtrue
slavetomaster.Themilitaryslave
thusdiffersfrom
otherslaves
innumerousways:he
aloneiscarefullyselected,
purposelyacquiredas ayouth,
trainedand
indoctrinated,thenemployed
asaprofes-sionalsoldier.He
joinsthe
rulingeliteand
belongstoa
corpsofsoldierswhichcan
seize
powerunderthe
rightcircumstances.Yet,
despitethesemanydifferences
betweenhim and
otherkinds
ofslaves, he
remainsatrueslave
as
longashis
mastercontrols
him.Onemustnot
dismisshis
slavery
as
a
formalityoras
legal
fiction.
