AConnectiontoIslam?Thedistribution

militaryslaverysketchedin
chapter2 stronglysuggeststhatIslam
laybehindthe
existenceofthisinstitution.Yetbefore
inquiringintotheroleof
Islam,letusconsiderother
possiblefactorsfortheexistenceof
militaryslav-ery.Ofthealternatives,threestandout:climate,Turks,andthestirrup?Muslim
landsfrom
SpaintonortheastIndiashareabasicclimatic
feature--dryheat;
perhapsthis
orsomeotherenvironmentalfeaturecould
explainmilitaryslavery.Withoutattemptingtoelaborateonthisconnection,wecan
rejectitasacause
bynotingthatthelands
fromSpaintoIndia
enjoyedthesameclimatebefore 622 C.E.Were
militaryslaveryrelatedtoclimate,wewould
expectittohaveexistedinthosesame
regions1.Thenotionthat
militaryslaveswere
merelymercenaries
inMuslim
clothinghasbeentreatedinchapter1.The
assumption
hereisthat
theywereadistinctphenomenon.Somescholarsgrantthatmilitary
slaveryoccurred
onlyinIslam-dorabutresisttheideathatitisconnectedtoIslam.
