An intimate konoba (fishing-themed restaurant) right on the end of the fortified peninsula. It can get busy, so be
prepared to queue for the freshly cooked fish and excellent shellfish. It is plain inside with chequered table cloths
and a few nautical items; there are tables outside as well. It also stocks a wide range of good Croatian wines.

Located near the town swimming pool and the Gradski Vrt stadium, this restaurant offers typical regional dishes
such as spicy paprika-flavoured stews and freshwater fish. The interior is inviting, with simple white walls and
dark wooden beams; it also has a good choice of wines.

Situated in the Old Town of Poreč, this small and intimate restaurant is a bit of a gem where one can try Istrian
truffle dishes without breaking the bank and enjoy good fish and seafood as well. It is rustic and cosy inside,
with a small sun trap of a terrace outside dotted by an olive tree or two.

Dating back to 1967, this fine hotel-restaurant has over the years built up a list of 700 wines and also serves
some marvellous fish – monkfish, sardines, cuttlefish and red mullet. Try the lazanje sa jastogom (creamy lobster
lasagne). The decor is fairly modern and simple.

Set 2 km (1 mile) along Rab’s east coast, Barbat is a traditional fishing port. This comes through strongly in the
cooking at the Kordić restaurant, where diners can sample locally caught spiny crab salad, whole grilled catch of
the day or lobsters from the tank – simply grilled or served with fresh tomato sauce along with a glass of dry wine.

Located in a historic 19th-century building, Municipium is one of the best restaurants in Rijeka. Try the škampi
buzara (fish in a rich garlic, tomato and Cognac sauce) or a heartier pašticada (beef stew with homemade
gnocchi). Alongside the wide range of fish and shellfish, they also have a small selection of vegetarian dishes.

This attractive restaurant serves traditional Istrian dishes such as bakalar (salt cod) in a white sauce or lamb stew
cooked with potatoes, pasta and grilled fish – all washed down with the extremely drinkable local Malvasia white

To the east of the city in a chic part of town, this restaurant enjoys a lovely location shaded by cooling pines and
overlooking the sea. Dine out on the terrace and feast on excellent fish and shellfish as well as typical grilled
meats and pasta while the sun sets. Specialities also include scampi and dry white wine.

Located in the heart of the Old Town, this restaurant has a lovely walled patio garden that also houses a
wood-burning oven and a char-grill. It specializes in seafood but actually serves anything that can be roasted,
grilled or barbecued. It is a little hidden down a cobbled side street, but the sign is visible.

Located in the town centre, this restaurant offers delicious food and Croatian wines. The mahogany covered
interior is a bit dark but there is a bar in the basement and a small terrace. Game is a speciality with venison and
wild boar on the menu along with fish – freshwater and from the coast.

This restaurant is set in the middle of the walled garden of the 16th-century Garibaldi palace, which is dotted
with statues and unusual plants. Very atmospheric, it attracts a well-heeled yachting crowd and romantic couples.
The food and wine are excellent, though a little expensive.

Situated in the marina complex on the waterfront, the Maestral provides breathtaking harbour views from the
first floor up. More upmarket than an average beachside restaurant, it offers quality meat dishes – especially
steaks – and of course locally caught fish. It can be busy at weekends when the shipping traffic increases.
