SHIFTING DUNES

In the 17th century, when the
Curonian Spit forests were cut
down to fuel industry and
constant military campaigns,
the mountainous dunes were
released. Carried by the
Baltic winds, the sand started
to shift up to 20 m (66 ft) a
year in places, bury ing entire
villages. It was only in the
19th century, when a vast number of trees were planted to
reforest the area, that the moving dunes were stopped.
