Start/finish: Lindau to Schönau

am Königsee.

Number of days: 5 days, allowing half

a day to explore Lindau.

Distance: 286 miles (461 km).

Road conditions: Roads are well

surfaced, but at times are steep and

twisting. Ice and snow may be a prob-

lem in winter. There are some roads with

brown “Deutsche Alpenstrasse” signs.

When to go: The best weather is from

May to October, while December to

Easter is ideal for winter sports.

Opening times: Museums often

close on Mondays, while shops

remain closed on Sundays.

Major festivals: Immenstadt:

Viehscheid (the departure of the

cows), Sept; Oberammergau:

Oberammergauer Passionsspiele

(passion play), May–Oct, every ten

years: next 2020.

DAY TRIP OPTIONS

The German Alps can be explored

in a series of day trips. Lindau or

Bad Hindelang are the best bases to

explore the Allgäu, while Füssen

and Oberammergau are ideal for

experi encing the richest concen-

tration of churches and palaces.

For stun ning lake and mountain

scenery, Tegernsee or Bad Tolz are

excellent bases, while the salt mining

history and Nazi asso cia tions of

Berchtesgadener Land are easily

explored from Berchtesgaden or Bad
