in the town of LindauA two-hour walking tour
Park in the parking lot and cross the
footbridge over the railroad tracks to
the main railway station. Continue
past the station to the Hafen 1 , or
harbor, which is domi na ted by a mid-
19th-century light house and
the statue of the Bavarian
Lion, the symbol of Lindau.
Pause here for cake or ice
cream or simply to admire
the lovely panorama of the
Austrian and Swiss Alps.
On the land ward side of
the harbor is the 13th- cen-

campanile-like architec ture is a
reminder of the town’s Italian links.
Con ti nue along the water front,
bear ing left into Reichs platz, which
fea tures the Lindavia Fountain and
the step-gabled old town hall, the
Altes Rathaus 3. Built between 1422
and 1436, it served as the venue of
an impe rial Diet or Reichstag in 1496.
Turn right along Ludwigstrasse, at theend of which lies the town’s Theater
4 , housed in a 700-year-old former
church of the Minorite order. Con tinue
past it into Fischer gasse, where a
half-timbe red passageway between
No. 19 and No. 21 leads to the
Gerberschanze 5 , a frag-

Return to Fischer gasse, then
turn right to reach the
Heidenmauer 6 , another
surviv ing part of the
town wall. Turn left into
Schmiedgasse to the
Marktplatz, which is domi-

the Protestant parish
Kirche von St. Stephan 7 , with an
interior dating from 1783 and the
Catholic church of Unserer Lieben
Frau 8 , whose inte rior is designed in
a florid southern German style. Facing
the two churches across the square is
the Haus zum Cavazzen 9 , a Baroque
mansion dating from 1730. Its interior
houses the Stadtmuseum (Apr–Oct:
closed Mon). From the Marktplatz,WHERE TO STAYLINDAU

Occupying an island off the north shore of Lake Constance, the lake
resort of Lindau prospered in the Middle Ages owing to its trade links
with Italy across the Alps. The town’s architectural legacy is a remin der
of its early prosperity, and with its café-lined waterfront and breath tak-
ing backdrop of the snow-capped Alps, Lindau is a delight to visit.BACK ROADS GERMANY
