Maximilianstrasse 0 , Lindau’s main
street, lined with old patrician houses.
Turn right into Schafgasse and left to
the Peterskirche q, an ancient church
which now serves as the town’s war
memo rial today. The interior contains
the only known frescoes by Hans
Holbein the Elder (c. 1460–1524). Next
to it is the Diebsturm (^) w, or Thief ’s
Tower, whose fairy-tale appear ance
belies its his torical role as a jail. Take
Zeppelinstrasse, turn right
to return to the parking lot.

across the causeway. At the
landward end, bear right.
Follow signs for A96, leave
the roundabout and get on
to the B12. After Lindau,
turn right on to the B31, which becomes
the B308 to continue to Immenstadt.
Park in the well-marked P2 Zentrum or
P4 Bahnhof.

This Alpine paradise by the Austrian
border is made up of scattered
settle ments. The mead ows here
are among the richest in
Germany for wild flowers,
and include some 40
species of orchid. The town
pro vides oppor tu ni ties in
summer for hiking and
rock climbing. More than
60 hiking trails (tourist office;
Am Bauernmarkt 1; 08324 89 20) are
available here. Visitors can try the
Salewa Klettersteig climb ing course,
which has, since 2008, ascended the
6,155-ft (1,876-m) Iseler peak (mountain
guides’ office; 08324 95 36 50). In winter,
the ski resort Oberjoch, which lies to
the east, has a reliable snow record.

To the east of Immenstadt town lies
the Grosse Alpsee, the Allgäu’s largest
natural lake. Popular in summer for
water sports, visitors can rent pedal
boats, rowing boats, sailing dinghies,

The Viehscheid
Immenstadt’s famous cheese is
made with the milk produced by
cows that graz e the Alpine meadows
above the town in sum mer. At the
end of the season, in September,
some 1,000 cows are brought down
during the festival known as the
Viehscheid. The herds men wear tradi-
tional folk dress, including Lederhosen.
