The city of Liège, on the broad River Meuse, remains the main
urban centre, surrounded by modern enterprises. Vestiges of the
more distant industrial past can be seen at the coal mine at
Blégny. Durbuy ranks as one of the prettiest towns in Belgium,
while the rural traditions of the Ardennes are presented
at Fourneau St-Michel’s museums. To the east, the
Hautes Fagnes, a wild area of moorland, are the high-
est part of the Ardennes. Many of the towns in the
Province of Luxembourg, notably Bastogne, have
monuments and museums that recall the devastation
at the end of World War II. Further south, the River
Semois runs through wooded hills, passing beneath
the dramatic medieval castle of Bouillon, and forming
some of the most beautiful landscapes in all Belgium.
