DEVTRAVELLER’S
TALES
THE LEGO MOVIE 2
VIDEOGAME
Let’s have a go then!
A
s film tie-ins go, you can always do far
worse than a Lego recreation. These
character-switching collectathons
have reliably presented plastic
worlds, each with a story-specific selection
of gimmicks. Lego’s latest self-referential
movie tie-in has world and gimmicks aplenty.
Emmett and company are separated, scattered
across the galaxy. Taking cues from Lego
Worlds (with a few gameplay refinements and
less of a sandbox structure), it’s up to you to
venture to unknown lands to find your friends.
Boasting plenty of worlds with oodles of
missions, caps and more to collect, hoovering up
everything in sight is a zen-like experience. Your
toybox is further expanded by the gacha-esque
relic system. Thwacking chests and completing
quests nets you colourful pods, which can
be opened at shops. They give you a random
selection of things like cosmetics and build sets.
You get your fair share of these just from playing
through the story but the constant trickle of
these goodies is perfect for tiny builders.
You need to batter things by mashing r in
order to collect enough bricks for bigger builds,
and it’s great fun tearing up Apocalypseberg as
Ultrakatty. But this destruction is framed as
necessary in order to build something better. The
familiar Lego value of collaboration being key
to problem-solving features
throughout. By the end, you’ll
even be helping out characters
who would’ve once been
enemies with their own quests.
Alongside collectibles, the
warm fuzzies are plentiful.
While no less a joy for
master builders like you and
us, tiny wees will love the
bombastic boss fights. Featuring
light platforming elements for
minimal frustration from pint-
sized gamers, they’re bright,
colourful, and memorable even
if their puzzle elements don’t
always stick the landing.
A TON OF BRICKS
As we’ve mentioned, there’s
less of a focus on sandbox
elements but they’re not
completely gone, relegated to
the verdant Syspocalypstar
world. Your goal is to rebuild
the community in whatever
way you like, though some
denizens have special requests.
Your aspiring builders will
have fun kitting out their own
town, though may be miffed
they can’t create their own
buildings. They can, however,
make their own player character
with a wide array of unlockable
customisation options. After
unlocking a character, all their
individual parts will be available
to mix and match... unless
they’re a Lego Friends minidoll
in which case, predictably,
they’re not compatible with
anything else in your wardrobe.
Having previously poked
fun at Hobbits, wizards, heroes
and villains, Lego’s own movie
games have been shy in poking
fun at themselves and this has
a similarly less cheeky sense of
humour. But what it lacks in
jokes, it makes up for in just
abouteverything else.

VERDICT
The Lego games are
the cat’s pyjamas,
and this movie tie-in
is no exception.
A cracking collectathon for
master and aspiring builders
alike. Simplistic mechanics make
for a relaxing, though no less
engaging, experience with plenty
to see and do. Jess Kinghorn
