  1. (D) Solar energy that is absorbed by ozone molecules and is partly turned
    into heat creates a warm region in the stratosphere which creates a stable air
    mass that resists sinking and mixing with the lower atmosphere, effectively
    forming a barrier. In the ozone layer, temperature increases with height,
    creating a stable and buoyant air mass that keeps an effective lid on the
    lower atmosphere.
