  1. (D) Current climatic warming is occurring much more rapidly than past
warming events. As Earth moved out of ice ages over the past million years,
the global average temperature rose 4–7°C over the last 5,000 years. In the
past 100 years, the temperature has risen 0.7°C, approximately ten times
faster than the average rate with current models predicting that Earth will
warm 2–6°C in the next century, a rate approximately 20 times faster than
    normal.
