V. Conclusion: It seems a little strange to trudge to the garden with a computer-printed
diagram of how to plant. As a result of last year’s experience, however, we will continue
to rely on the computer’s brain to do what we’ve been doing for years. But now we get

ANALYSIS of THE SAMPLE oUTLINE foR A SPEECH
While the outline includes most of the characteristics of that for a paper, note the
three distinguishing features:
- The purpose statement replaces the thesis sentence.
- The introduction not only appears in the outline but also is written as a full
sentence (or sentences) even though the outline is a topic outline. - The conclusion likewise appears in the outline, written out as full sentences.
The information in this section should help you to develop a suitable outline for
whatever purpose you face, whether it be to take notes on reading matter or from
an oral presentation, to prepare a long paper, or to plan a speech. Consult cross-
references for thorough understanding.
