Document 2.5 native attack on Jamestown

Matthaeus Merian (1593–1650), a Swiss engraver, created this image of Opechankanough’s

attack on a Virginian settlement. A simultaneous attack on Jamestown is pictured in the

background. Opechankanough’s brother, Chief Powhatan (Doc. 1.3), had established

an uneasy peace with the colonists of Jamestown. However, the English expansion into

native territories in pursuit of land forced Opechankanough to lead a series of raids

against the Virginia colonists. After Opechankanough’s raids, the Virginia colony was

placed under a governor appointed by the king.
