In this traditional Japanese song, “To ̄ ryanse” (“Let Me Pass”), pilgrims ask permission to pass through the narrow gate to the
castle housing the Tenjin Shrine. Long ago, children’s third, fifth, and seventh birthdays were celebrated. “Please allow me to
pass through... to celebrate this child’s seventh birthday. I’ve come to dedicate my offering.. .”Today, this song is heard at
many street crossings to tell blind people when to cross.
