Charles Tilly died during the time I was working on the third
edition of A History of Modern Europe. His friends, colleagues, and former
students—I am all three—miss him very much. He taught me that it is bet¬
ter not to see history as a series of bins that one opens and then shuts
before getting on to the next topic, but rather to look for the big news, the
major themes, that have been the dynamics of change and provide revealing
continuities, even amid astonishing change. At the same time, he believed
in keeping ordinary people fully in view by analyzing, describing, and evok¬
ing their histories.
