xiv Preface

frustrating days to the joyful ones. Having already mentioned the contributions
to this book of Mike Chase, Ross Martin, Kim Miner, Kevin Goff , Matt Silva,
Brian Spellman, and Ryan Sindler, I must add thanks to Colin Packard for his
screenwriting, Conor Nicoll for the use of his coff ee mug story in Chapter 8,
Kendelyn Ouellette for her photography, and the fi lmmaking participants for
their time and eff orts. It has been a true pleasure to work with these former
students who have become respected collaborators. Along with this continued
creative exchange, I must reiterate that all the SHS students who have been
in my classes have been a part of this book. From the fi rst group in the fall
of 1999 to those with me at this writing in the fall of 2009, I thank all of the
learners who have taken part in our mutual discoveries.
Th anks to the many educators who have contributed to this book through
their work: professors Frank Bellizia and Michael Duni for their oversight of
my Masters degree work at Union Institute and University; Gaetana Marrone
of Princeton University for her support and guidance during and aft er my
undergraduate years; and my many fi ne teachers whose inspiring examples
have served as pedagogical models. I wish also to thank my colleagues in the
Suffi eld Schools for their high professional standards and dedication to their
students and our community. In particular, I extend my gratitude to Dennis
Picard, the English Media and television studio pioneer in Suffi eld, and
Stephannie Holland, who has provided tremendous opportunities to students
in media and theater arts; their support has been valued. Finally, I would
like to express my deep appreciation to Nancy Lombard, whose abundant
contributions to Suffi eld’s learning community are sincerely uplift ing and
whose encouragement and friendship have been invaluable to me.
Th e professional team at Delmar Cengage Learning has been phenomenal.
Jim Gish has made it all possible through his lucid comprehension of the
purpose and substance of this undertaking, and I have sincerely appreciated
his hard work and enthusiasm. Meaghan O’Brien labored tirelessly through
all of the angles of the project, and I greatly respect her calm demeanor and
thoroughness. Th anks so much to Erin Brennan for her energy and expertise
in bringing this book to classrooms. It has been a true pleasure to work with
such a talented group of collaborators, including Sarah Timm, Joy Koscis,
Wendy Troeger, Glenn Castle, and Chris Catalina.
Last, I wish to thank my mother, father, and our entire close-knit family for
their support and aff ection. And I must conclude with a most profound thank
you to Alexandra and our children, Matteo, Lucie, and Vincent, for their
inspiration and love; they have been my sources of motivation and energy
during this entire project.
