experienced through increasingly smaller formats, from laptops to cellular
phones. Th ese media are stimulating new communicative strategies designed
to take advantage of these formats. What are the most appropriate ways to
create moving images the size of a postage stamp? What compositions, colors,
and movements work well in these formats? Internet platforms, new 3-D
polarizing technologies, and unforeseen developments are sure to present
appealing creative challenges to future fi lmmakers.
Naturally, directors, cinematographers, and other motion picture
creators who have worked to achieve desired framing, exposure, focus, hue,
and visual style must wonder how much of their intent and vision are being
experienced in such circumstances. Aft er all, Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and
Th e Empire Strikes Back (1980) seem to lose a little something when watched
on an iPhone.
