Agostino Agazzari (1578–ca.1640)
- Johnson, Margaret F. “Aggazari’s Eumelio,a dramma pastorale.” MQ57-3
(July 1971): 491–505.
Although Eumelio(1606) was among the earliest Roman operas, it has
received scant attention. It does have some interesting features, including
“snatches of humor” and “well-developed musical and harmonic structures.”
Tonal centers underline dramatic action. Genesis and plot are given, with the
suggestion that the opera deserves more study.

Citations to brief writings and reviews of the operas. The major account of the
most successful stage work is Clark’s own dissertation: “Spanish Music with a
Universal Accent: Isaac Albéniz’s Opera Pepita Jiménez” (U. of California, Los
Angeles, 1992). It includes a detailed genesis study, musical analysis, and per-
formance history and considers the importance of the work in the develop-
ment of Spanish national opera. A catalogue of stage works is in an appendix.
Indexed. A section on the opera is also found in: - Clark, Walter Aaron. Isaac Albéniz: Portrait of a Romantic.Oxford: Claren-
don Press, 1998. xviii, 321p. ISBN 0-19-811636-X. ML410 .A33 C6.
A useful biography, with worklist and discussion of the compositions. Pepita
Jiménez(1896) is well described (genesis, reception, analysis). There is also a
thorough treatment of the unfinished trilogy on King Arthur, of which only
Merlin(1886) was completed. Notes, strong bibliography of some 250 entries,
expansive index.

A life and works, with genesis of the operas, along with program notes and
reception. Backnotes, worklist, name index, no bibliography. - Williamson, John. “Eugen d’Albert: Wagner and Verismo.” MR45 (1984):
26–46.
Wagnerian and Puccinian influences on Tieflandand Liebesketten. Analysis
shows the treatment of motifs. The composer’s problem, says Williamson, was
that he was caught between styles.
