Using manuscript evidence, the author establishes the work’s completion date
as 1763, a year earlier than had been supposed. It was rehearsed but not staged
in Rameau’s lifetime. Cast, chorus, and orchestra are reconstructed from the
manuscript lists of performers. The article was followed by a full-scale study in
the author’s dissertation, “Jean-Philippe Rameau: Les Boréades” (U. of Paris,
