Germany (German: Deutschland; French: Allemande; Italian: Germania)
Much of the literature reflects the division of the country after World War II into Bun-
desrepublik Deutschland (BRD), or West Germany, and Deutsche Demokratische
Republik (DDR), or East Germany. Postwar literature on opera in Berlin was also
divided, according to the control of the city by the BRD (the West Berlin zone) and
DDR (the East Berlin zone). Die Deutsche Oper was in West Berlin, while Die Staats-
oper and Die Komische Oper were in East Berlin. These geographical aspects were
annulled with the reunification of Germany in 1990 under the official name Bundesre-
publik Deutschland.
