    By “exotic” was meant the Middle East and the Far East, including India.
    Interest in those lands was fired by travelers’ accounts and led to impressions
    of the regions by painters and writers. All musical forms had their exotic ele-
    ments, which are well described here. Among the themes employed in opera
    were Mohammed, the Crusades, Mongols, the French in Egypt, Turks, and
    Spanish Moors. Schmitt is specific in describing how those effects were gained
    through musical devices and plots. Special attention to the exotic operas of
