  1. (A) When a neuron depolarizes, sodium ions flow into the cell. Sodium ions carry a positive
charge, and their influx helps change the charge of the cell from negative to positive. The negative
charge of the cell at rest is due, largely, to the presence of many chloride ions in the cell; this
number does not increase during depolarization. Potassium ions also carry a positive charge and
flow into the cell when it is depolarized. Neither magnesium nor strontium plays a role in this
    process.
