ADVERBS: Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.
Often, adverbs end in “ly.”
Adverbs: constantly, quickly, extremely, confidently...
Don’t assume that just because a word ends in “ly” it is an adverb. Here are some common adjectives that
end in “ly”: lovely, lonely, motherly, friendly, neighborly.
Adverbs often tell WHEN something happens, WHERE something happens, HOW something happens, UNDER
WHAT CONDITIONS something happens, or TO WHAT DEGREE something happens.

When: She arrived early for her date.
Where: The hummingbird made a nest outside.
How: Sore from his workout, he moved slowly down the stairs.
Degree: I am too tired to go for a run.
Adverbs modify verbs: The tiger ran rapidly.
The adverb rapidly is modifying the verb ran, letting us know HOW.
Adverbs modify adjectives: He is an unusually bad cook.
The adverb unusually modifies the adjective bad, letting us know TO WHAT DEGREE.
Adverbs modify other adverbs: The teacher ran out of patience very quickly.
The adverb very modifies the adverb quickly, letting us know TO WHAT DEGREE.
