(B) we have the plural noun “examples,” so this answer choice correctly fixes the noun agreement
error.
(C) the noun agreement error is fixed, but removing the “of” and inserting the “where” changes
the meaning of the sentence.
(D) “exemplify” is a plural verb and “Watts and Compton” is a plural compound subject so SVA
works. “A neighborhood” refers to ONE neighborhood, not TWO, so we still have a noun
agreement error.
(E) “exemplify” is a plural verb matching the plural compound subject “Watts and Compton,” but
who the heck is “they”? Beware of ambiguous pronouns!

Revised sentence:

Watts and Compton are examples of
neighborhoods that have a shortage of
adequately staffed schools.

Correct Answer: (B)

  1. Given the price of admission to a movie, the cost
of it typically floats around $13, many people say,
“I’ll wait for the movie to come out on DVD.”

(A) the cost of it typically floats
(B) and typically it floats at a cost
(C) which typically floats
(D) in that it typically floats
(E) they typically float

There are several errors with this sentence as written, but let’s focus on the Redundancy error. In the
non-underlined portion of the sentence we see “price” and in the underlined portion we see “cost.” Price and
cost mean the same thing and are redundant.

(B) we have that ambiguous, unnecessary “it” and we still have “cost,” which is redundant to
“price.”
(C) “which” refers to price and is both idiomatically correct and fixes the redundancy error.
“Floats” is a singular verb that refers to the singular subject “price” so SVA checks fine as well.
Notice also how this is the least wordy answer choice.
(D) what is “it”? The movie, the price? We just can’t be sure. While in that it is a grammatically
correct phrase, it is not idiomatically correct as used in this sentence.
(E) who the heck is “they”? Also, “price” is singular.

Revised sentence:

Given the price of admission to a movie, which
typically floats around $13, many people say,
“I’ll wait for the movie to come out on DVD.”
