North America is the third-largest continent.


Two countries, Canada and the United States,


take up three-quarters of the continent, which also includes

 INUIT PEOPLE have lived in
the Arctic for centuries, surviving
by hunting fish, seals, walruses,
and whales. Today, most Inuit live
THE POLAR REGION in towns or small settlements.
The climate in the Arctic is harsh—
average winter temperatures can be
as low as -40°F (-40°C), and in
midwinter the Sun never rises.
Parts of the region are permanently
covered by ice. Despite this, the
Arctic is home to many animals,
including polar bears and seals.
