The Caribbean
There are more than
7,000 islands, islets, and
reefs in the Caribbean Sea.
Most are too small to be
inhabited, but the bigger ones
make up 13 countries and a
number of dependent territories.
In the summer months, the
Caribbean is often hit by huge
tropical storms, called hurricanes,
that can do great damage.

OThe Rockies are the highest and
longest mountain range in North
America, stretching for 3,000 miles
(4,800 km) through Canada and the
United States.

ODeath Valley, on the border of
Nevada and California, is the
continent’s hottest, lowest place.

OThe San Andreas Fault in
California marks the place where
two of the plates that make up the
Earth’s crust meet. Movement here
causes frequent earthquakes.

 THE ARCTIC OCEAN
contains large areas of floating
sea ice. This forms when the
temperature drops to about
28.8°F (-1.8°C) and causes
the seawater to freeze.

Measured by the
length of its shoreline,
Hudson Bay in
northern Canada is
the world’s largest bay.

The Panama Canal
allows boats to travel between
the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans,
without going around South America.

The Bering Strait separates
North America from Asia and
is just 53 miles wide (85 km).
