FAMOUS PLACES

The Atacama Desert

This desert stretches along

the western coast of Chile

and is the driest place on

Earth. In some parts of the

Atacama, no rainfall has

ever been recorded.

OCape Horn is the southernmost
tip of South America. The seas
around the cape are extremely
dangerous because of high winds,
huge waves, and strong currents.

OAt about 4,400 miles (7,000 km)
long, the Andes are the world’s
longest mountain range. They
extend through seven countries.

OLake Titicaca (between Bolivia
and Peru) lies 12,500 ft (3,812 m)
above sea level, making it the
world’s highest navigable lake.

MACHU PICCHU The Inca people built
this city in the Andes over 500 years ago. It is
known as the “Lost City of the Incas” because
it was forgotten for centuries, until Hiram
Bingham rediscovered it in 1911.

The Orinoco is one of the
largest rivers in South America
(though no river there comes
close to the length of the
Amazon!). It is 1,330 miles
(2,140 km) long.

The highlands of
Colombia are one of
the wettest places in the
world, with one town,
Tutunendo, averaging
448 in (11,394 mm) of
rain each year.

The area around Lake Maracaibo
in Venezuela contains large
deposits of oil.

The Pampas is a
huge grassy plain that
