Life in South America


Dramatic landscapes, including the Andes


mountains, lively cities, music, dancing, exuberant


carnivals, and passionate soccer crowds are just


some of the things to see in South America.


 FAVELA Rio is not all beaches and
skyscrapers. Many of its inhabitants live
in poverty in shantytowns called favelas.

FAMOUS SOUTH AMERICANS

OEva Peron (1919–1952), often known
as Evita, was married to the Argentinian
president, Juan Perón. She helped many
poor people and campaigned for better
conditions for workers.
OPele (born 1940) Brazilian former
soccer player, considered by many to be
the greatest soccer player of all time.
OGabriel Garcia Marquez (born 1927)
Colombian novelist who was awarded the
Nobel Prize for literature in 1982.
OSimón Bolívar (1783-1830), born in
Venezuela, was a key leader in the
successful struggle for independence of
much of South America, including Peru,
Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia.

 RIO DE JANEIRO Famous for its
dramatic setting on the Atlantic coast,
Brazil’s second-largest city is overlooked
by a giant statue of Christ the Redeemer.

 LLAMA People who live in the
Andes keep llamas for their wool and
use them to carry heavy loads.

WILDLIFE
This continent is home to a huge
variety of animals: tropical parrots
and snakes in the rain forest, bears
and condors in the Andes, and
anteaters and cavies on the
Pampas grasslands.

LANDSCAPE
South America contains almost
every kind of landscape, including
rain forest, grassland, desert, and
mountain.

 MANED WOLF
This long-legged wolf
lives in Uruguay.

At 3,212 ft (979 m), Angel Falls in Venezuela is
the world’s highest waterfall. It was named
after an American pilot, Jimmy Angel, in 1933.
