because they are still learning all the rules for decoding. Emphasize
that you are writing what they say so that you don’t forget, and tell
them that you will read the words to them.


  • Start with characters. List the character options. Ask whether the
    story will have people and/or animal characters. Ask whether the
    story will have personification. Determine how many characters will be
    in the story and who will be the main character.

  • Then write down setting options. Choose the setting(s) for the story.

  • Finally, write down ideas for plot, or what might happen in the story.
    Choose a few plot ideas to work with.

  • Tell students that in the next lesson, they will write/draw their own
    story. For now, they should continue to think about the character(s),
    setting(s), and plot of their story.
