70 The Sports Scholarships Insider’s Guide

Do whatever is requested quickly and accurately. Often,

when a coach must choose between student athletes who are

similar academically and athletically, they most often choose

the one who has demonstrated discipline and maturity in his/

her communications with the coach.

Some recruiting services recommend that a prospect staple

a copy of a personally created questionnaire. That is a colossal

error. When a coach receives a stapled questionnaire returned

from a prospect that has made the first contact by sending a

profile, it demonstrates that the prospect is fishing for schol-

arships and has no special interest in the coach’s program.

Some coaches may not care if they receive mass-produced and

stapled questionnaires to their questionnaire, but most feel

exploited and don’t pursue that prospect.
