[Please continue to model the Think Pair Share process for students, as
necessary, and scaffold students in their use of the process.]
I am going to ask a question. I will give you a minute to think about the
question, and then I will ask you to turn to your partner and discuss the
question. Finally, I will call on several of you to share what you discussed
with your partner.

- Evaluative Think Pair Share: What is this? Why do you think it is called
the Statue of Liberty?
➶ How are Thomas Jefferson and the Statue of Liberty related? - After hearing today’s read-aloud and questions and answers, do
you have any remaining questions? [If time permits, you may wish to
allow for individual, group, or class research of the text and/or other
resources to answer these remaining questions.]
Word Work: Independence
- In the read-aloud you heard about an important document called the
Declaration of Independence. - Say the word independence with me three times.
- Independence means freedom from outside control; or the ability to
do something on your own. - A person who shows independence can take care of himself or
herself without help from others. - Now that you are older, you can do more things by yourself. This
shows independence. Tell your partner some things you do by
yourself that show independence. Try to use the word independence
when you tell about it.
[Ask two or three students. If necessary, guide and/or rephrase the
students’ responses: “I show independence when I... ”] - What’s the word we’ve been talking about?
