Brave/Fearful

1. In today’s folktale, Jumping Mouse is usually brave, but he becomes
   fearful.


2. Say the word brave with me three times. Say the word fearful with me
   three times.


3. When you are brave, you do not show that you are scared, and you
   are willing to do difficult things. Fearful is the opposite of brave. When
   you are fearful, you are afraid and scared.


4. At the beginning of the story, Jumping Mouse is brave, even when he
   faces challenges.
   Jumping Mouse became fearful when he smelled a wolf.


5. Tell your partner about a time you were brave and a time you were
   fearful. Use the words brave and fearful when you tell about it. I will
   call on a few students to share. [Alternatively, you can have students
   show you a brave face and a fearful face. Then you can describe a
   few situations and have them make either a brave or fearful face.]

   bison’s hooves across the grassy plain.


2. Say the word beneath with me three times.


3. To be beneath something is to be under or below that thing.


4. Esteban likes to sit beneath the tree on a sunny day.
   Ella found her library books beneath the sofa.


5. Using objects around you or careful movements, show what beneath
   looks like. Say the word beneath while you show it. I will call on a few
   students to show their example.
