Electric fuel pumps: The fuel injection design requires that the fuel be
delivered at high pressures in order to atomize the fuel into a fine mist.
Engineers designed the electric fuel pump, capable of much higher pressures
than their mechanical predecessors. Once again in a cost-cutting move, they
combined the fuel pump, fuel gauge sending unit, and fuel pickup into one unit
and placed it in the fuel tank saving money, space, and mechanical energy from
the engine.
