SYSTEM PROBLEMS SOLVED

Tom,

Q I own a 1988 S-10 blazer (4.3L). When I start the vehicle (after it has run

and the engine is still hot) it stumbles and barely runs. If I give it gas, the
engine stalls or just continues to rough idle. The vehicle does this for a
minute or two, and then finally recovers and idles normally. In my opinion it
seems to be re-learning the idle speed, so I think the ECU is bad. Aside from
this problem, the vehicle runs fine (except for bogging down somewhat when
stepping on the gas). Not too long ago I replaced the ECU, as well as just
about everything else related to engine management. To no avail!! This
problem really boggles me. Please help!

Allan,

A I think you are suffering from the application of an old adage: “A little

knowledge is a dangerous thing.” Symptoms of this malady usually manifest
themselves in assumptions that result in self-destructive behaviors. For
example, spending exorbitant amounts of money on parts you assume are
bad, and ultimately ending up where you started—with an unrepaired
vehicle. At this point, many do-it-yourselfers go to a service garage in
frustration. When they are presented with a repair bill, they cry, “Rip off!!!” I
hope you are not “one of those.” So save yourself time, aggravation, and
money by identifying the real problem (you cannot repair your computer-
controlled vehicle for lack of expertise or tools), let go of your compulsion to
repair it yourself, and—just a suggestion here—get a computer diagnostic by
a professional automotive diagnostician! Good luck.
