MAINTENANCE TIP
Inspect the drive belt for the alternator. If it’s worn or glazed, replace it. On
cars equipped with a serpentine belt (one belt drives everything), check the
automatic tensioner to make sure it’s maintaining the proper belt tension. If
it’s too loose, then replace it because a loose belt will slip on the alternator
pulley, meaning it cannot properly charge the battery. Finally, have a
charging system analysis performed annually, preferably just before winter
sets in. This test measures the alternator’s ability to generate voltage and
amperage. If its performance is below factory specifications, then it’s ready
for the trash heap.
