HOSES

Coolant hoses make up the infrastructure through which the coolant flows to
and from the engine, radiator, and heater core. These hoses are designed to
withstand 14 to 17 psi, high temperatures, continual expansion and contraction,
and exposure to coolant chemicals. They are made of tough rubber with fiber
reinforcement. Because of tight engine compartments and thus tight clearances,
they are usually preformed from the factory.
Because of the rigorous operating environment, coolant hoses are subject to
degradation. They become either extremely soft or extremely hard and brittle.
Hose failure is often the cause of breakdowns on highways, leaving you
stranded. The best way to prevent a breakdown is to check the condition of your
hoses regularly. Ask your tech to check them at every oil change. Hoses should
be resilient to the touch. If they are either too soft or too hard, replace them.
