POWER STEERING SYSTEMS
Power steering uses hydraulic power-assist to ease the effort of steering the car.
A power steering pump that uses hydraulic fluid pushes the fluid under pressure
through the system to the steering gear, making it easier to steer your vehicle.
The fluid in this system is a lot like transmission fluid. It’s a hydraulic fluid that
is subject to heat, friction, heat expansion, and cold contraction. Over time it
loses its viscosity (ability to flow). You must perform periodic checks to
determine its health. If the fluid smells burnt, or appears to be brown or black in
color, or has metal flakes in it, it must be replaced. These fluid conditions will
destroy the power steering system in short order.
