COOLING SYSTEMS

The coolants used in cooling systems contain lubricants. Engine coolant (in
addition to absorbing heat from the engine and offering cold weather protection)
has a lubricating property to keep water pumps lubricated and to slow down the
process of rust and scale buildup. Over time the lubrication property of the
coolant is diminished, as are the rest of the chemical properties. As a result,
friction increases heat, and more rust and scale forms. These wear factors cause
water pump failure and degradation of the cooling system. That’s why
manufacturers recommend cooling system flushes and refills every two years or
24,000 miles. Intervals may vary depending on what type of coolant is used.
Remember to check the service schedule for your particular car to determine if
you fall into the normal or the severe schedule for each system of your vehicle.
