CREATIVE MOVEMENT
GET THE
EFFECT IN
PHOTOSHOP
Already taken a picture
that you think would suit
a zoom blur treatment?
Fear not! You can do it
easily in post-production
if you have Photoshop or
Elements. Just load up
your shot and hit Ctrl/
Cmd+J to duplicate
your shot. Then go to
Filter>Blur>Radial
Blur and in the box that
appears set the Blur
Method to Zoom and
Quality to Good and drag
the Blur Center so it sits
above your focal point.
Now you can drag the
Amount slider to change
the strength of the blur
hit OK to apply it. All
that’s left is to use a
soft-edged Eraser Tool to
paint over your subject to
bring back definition.
SETUP 3 BURST AT THE
SEAMS WITH CREATIVITY
A classic ‘zoom burst’ is an easy and fun way
to get creative in-camera. You’ll need to
attach a zoom lens, like an 18-55mm, then
go into your Shutter Priority (Tv) mode and
set a shutter speed of 1/10 sec and an ISO of
- Rotate the zoom ring to its widest value
then focus on your subject and press the
shutter and rapidly twist the zoom ring to the
other side before the exposure finishes. The
result is a rush of movement towards the
centre. If the zoom effect is over powering
you can try twisting the zoom ring less.
Kit needed: Lens with a zoom ring
Exposure: 1/10 sec, f/5.6, ISO100
SETUP 4 TRACK AND PAN
To get brilliant panning shots full of
movement go into your camera’s Shutter
Priority (Tv) mode. Now set the shutter
speed to 1/40 sec to start (faster subjects
will require faster shutter speeds) and set the
ISO to 100. Activate your AI Servo focusing
mode and ensure you have a single active AF
point in the middle of your viewfinder. Keep
the shutter button half-pressed and hover
your active AF point over your subject as
they move to continually focus on them.
Track their movement and take a burst of
shots as they pass in front of you being sure
to track them after you’ve shot to create a
smooth panning motion.
Kit needed: Kit lens or telephoto lens
Exposure: 1/40 sec, f/22, ISO100
