pajamas, a home studio would be best. We worked
to fi nd a house with enough living space and a large
studio, offi ce, and storage for me. For the past 23 years,
we had been living in a 1916 Queen Anne bungalow
near Charlotte, N.C., and before that, we lived in a
small cottage in Charlottesville, Virginia, built in the
late 1700s. We like old stuff. To our great surprise, we
discovered that this area has a large concentration of
modernist homes, and fell in love with a mid-century
modern Deck House built in 1970. When people talk
about us living in an old house, we just laugh—1970
isn’t old when you’ve lived in one built in the 1700s!
The house is built into a hillside, and my studio is
downstairs. It has huge windows, a gas fi replace, and
a glass door facing out into the woods. Beyond the
doors, there’s a patio where I can paint and dye outside,
weather permitting. An adjoining small bedroom with
a tiny bathroom and closet serves as my offi ce and
storage for materials, quilts, books, etc.
