“Kokedama Bonsai”

YOSHIKO KOBAYASHI • KATANO-CITY, OSAKA, JAPAN
“Bonsai is the Japanese traditional art expressing
large-scale nature and landscape in smaller pottery
pots. It is a very deep world. As for Kokedama
Bonsai gardening, we beginners are trying to make
it, too. Kokedama (moss ball) is made by wrapping
roots of little trees or plants using moss. I enjoy
making and feeling nature’s greenery in my home.”

“Green Beans”

LYNN KAMOLA • AUBURN, WASHINGTON
“At fi rst, our bean patch was just a jumble
of greens. With closer observation, patterns
emerge. Th e leaves grow in threes and
alternate with stems that support the
blossoms and beans, which grow in pairs.
Drafting a pattern representing these
relationships was my design challenge.
Cutting and sewing 87 pieces in a 5" x 7"
rectangle was a challenge in itself. Our garden
benefi ts, too. Recognizing the structure of the
bean plant, I have become a more thorough
and less random bean picker.”
