Children's Mercy Hospital Prepped & Ready

  • Amount of information

A common theme identified among the survey
respondents and host site interviews revealed that,
although the content was rich and valuable, there was a
lot of content to absorb in the 90-minute presentation.
That being said, there was dually a desire from some
participants for more in-depth information for
individual topics.

  • Presentation style

The current program format is professional and
delivered very effectively by Dr. Sullivant. However, we
found the amount of content, paired with the academic
presentation style, may make it difficult for some
parents to engage meaningfully with the material. In
our IDI’s we heard from several people that simple
language and presentation is important for some less
educated populations or those with language barriers.

  • Stigmas

Despite the increase in mental health issues, shifts
in the perception of safety and self-defense, and other
risk factors we’ve seen as a result of the recent
pandemic - including the rise in focus and discussion
surrounding these issues - there are still stigmas for
some individuals around these topics as they are
covered in the Prepped & Ready program. And those
stigmas may contribute to a reluctance to participate.

  • Access

Geography can be a limiting factor for in-person
events. For some lower income populations, there is a
possible issue in attending without having access to
reliable transportation. Additionally, access to
technology or internet services may be a barrier for
digital implementations of this program.

  1. Representation

There are unique communication challenges and
nuances that are specific for each different subset of
the parent audience but a common thread in our
primary and secondary research for all of them was
that of trust.^1

“It comes down to trust. It comes down to who is
telling me that this is ok, and do I trust them?”
