10 Lonely Planet Traveller October 2017Louise Waldron from Peterboroughspent a week in Kolkata``````I was on a photographyworkshop in Kolkata whenI visited Kumartuli, thetraditional pottersâ quarterwhere craftsmen sculptidols from local clay. I firstfocused on the potters andtheir deities, but was soondrawn to the colourfullanes and their fascinatingglimpse of daily life.I witnessed the morningrituals of washing andshaving, women hangingclothes, and childrenand dogs scampering by.I observed this man fora while before decidingto take a shot. The paintedwalls and simple activityoffered a vignette of calmamid Kolkataâs chaos; it wasthe perfect moment, andreminds me of a city thatstays in my heart and mind.
