em chácaras, mesmo assim aquela vida um pouquinho asselvajida da Grussaí de antes

de 1924 era um mundinho de encantos para nós – eu, Dulce, Ruy, principalmente. Por-

que vocês posteriores, sobretudo os dois últimos, não alcançaram mais aquilo e sua

plenitude.

Isso parece indicar que a intensa mecanização da moderna vida urbana é pouco

adequada ao espírito da meninice. Trepar em árvores, lidar com fruteiras e com a maior

variedade possível de bichos parece necessário a uma educação cabal.

Eis um conceito de quem foi guri franzino e desde muito cedo apegadíssimo a

leituras. Para crianças fortes e menos intelectuais – que é o comum – isso deve fazer

falta de modo ainda mais nítido, quanto não teve.

Letter To Judith

Campos, March 18th, 1976

Oh, Judith – with th to not to confuse with others less important (to me):

I still need to make, for these children evocations, a series of notes, comments

about many of the short sonnets, maybe about the majority of them.

For those who only know the modern Grussaí (without any outstanding persona-

lity), they won’t learn very well the charms, the ones from the past without some explana-

tory comments – this is how a recent reader warned me, moreover, too much sagacious.

You did not know the typical Grussaí, the genuine, the one which started chan-

ging in the month of your birth, January of 1924, because that was the first summer with

motor vehicles carrying people and luggage to and from Atafona.

The following summer was the inauguration of the church; it was just a little

chapel before, too simple! It was really rare that a new family showed up among those

thirty that everyone already knew; too rare.

New people only appeared when the owners stayed there only for a month and

then rented their houses during the following month – or just went there in December or
