2 Lodi
Although Lodi used to be
the ‘Watermelon Capital
of the World,’ today, wine
rules this patch of the
valley. Breezes from the
Sacramento River Delta
soothe the area’s hot
vineyards, where more
zinfandel grapes are
grown than anywhere
else in the world. Some
particularly old vines
have been tended by
the same families for a
century. Lodi’s diverse
soil is a sometimes rocky,
sometimes sandy loam,
giving its zinfandels a
range of characteristics.
