Staphylococcus 231

Extracellulartoxinsandenzymes.S.aureussecretesnumerousenzymesand
toxinsthatdetermine,togetherwiththefinestructuresdescribedabove,the
pathogenesisoftheattendantinfections.Themostimportantare:
&Plasmacoagulaseisanenzymethatfunctionslikethrombintoconvert
fibrinogenintofibrin.Tissuemicrocoloniessurroundedbyfibrinwallsare
difficulttophagocytose.
&a-toxincanhavelethalCNSeffects,damagesmembranes(resultingin,
amongotherthings,hemolysis),andisresponsibleforaformofdermone-
crosis.
