largetablesstandinthemiddlesection,alongwithapair
ofoldbraziers.Asmallertablestandsontheeasternledge.
Theskeletalremainsofdozensofdeadwarriors—dwarves,
gnomes,ores,andogres—attesttothefiercenessofthe
fightingthattookplaceherelongago.
Sevenghoulslurkintheshadowsonthewesternledge.
Theynoticeanylightornoiseelsewhereinthecaveand
quicklybounddowntoattack.Theundeadarehungryand
fightuntildestroyed.

consistsofathinlayerofbrokenshellsfromstrange,pale
mussels,andafishyodorhangsintheair.
Apassageleadssouthfromthisarea,andasetofsteps
climbsuptotheeast.Asluggishstreamflowsoutofthecave
tothenortheast.
Thepoolis 20 feetdeepinthemiddle.Thestreamtothe
northeastis 3 feetdeep,andtheceilingofthepassageis
2 to 3 feetabovethewater.Characterscaneasilywade
throughthestreamtoarea18.
Acharacterwhoexploresthepoolfindsanoldskeleton
lyingonthebottom, 10 feetfromtheshoreandunder 10
feetofwater.Thesearetheremainsofahumanwizard
fromoldPhandalinwhodieddefendingtheminesagainst

seriousobstaclethatpreventsNezznarfromreaching
hisobjective—theForgeofSpells(area15).Thedrowis
stillformulatingaplantogetpasttheundeadguardians
inthisarea.
Ablastfurnaceandamechanicalbellowspoweredbya
waterwheeldominatethislargechamber.Thefurnaceiscold
anddark,butheapsofcoalarepilednearby,alongwithcarts
fullofunrefinedore.Thewaterwheelsitsinaten-foot-wide
channelcutintotheflooroftheroom,butthechannelisdry.
Passagesexittothewest,south,andeast.Theemptychannel
exitstothenorthandeast.
Morethanadozenwitheredcorpsesarescatteredaround
theroom.Theseslaindwarvesandoresarestillwearing
theremnantsoftheirarmor.Floatingabovethemisaskull
engulfedingreenflame.
Eightofthefallendwarfwarriorsarezombies.Theyrise
andpursueanylivingcreaturesthatentertheroom,but
theydonotpursuecreaturesoutsidethisareaformore
than 1 round.Inaddition,afarmoreintelligentundead
guardsthisarea:aflameskull.Thiscreaturewasa
servantofthehumanwizardsalliedwiththePhandelver
dwarvesandgnomes,anditcontinuestoactonancient
instructionstopreventintrudersfrompassingthrough.
ThisimpressivechamberwastheheartoftheWave
EchoCaveminingoperation.Here,thedwarvesmelted
downtheiroretorefineingotsofsilver,gold,andplatinum.
Thedrychanneliswherethedwarvesdivertedthestream
fromarea 18 topowerthewaterwheelhere.Thatinturn
operatedthebellowsthatfedthefurnace.
Thechannel’sbottomis 5 feetbelowfloorlevel,andno
abilitycheckisrequiredtoscrambleinorout.Characters
inthechannelcanfollowitoutofthisroomtothenorthor
totheeast,thoughtheceilingisonly 5 feethighafterthe
channelexitsthisroom.
