from the beach, the plain rooms in the main

building at cheery Sunil’s are a bit run down,

but the owners operate a couple of other es-

tablishments with plusher rooms (up to Rs

7000) nearby. Note that they don’t pay com-

mission, so many three-wheeler drivers will

tell you it’s closed – it’s not.

5 Eating

Just north of the bridge, on the main road,

you’ll see food markets (off Main St) and sev-

eral fruit vendors with gorgeous displays of

produce. There are also lots of simple store-

fronts with quick eats.

200; h8am-8pm) The best central option is a

snazzy old place with a wooden interior and

display cases bulging with baked and savoury

treats. The soups and curries are good.

Matara has the widest range of shops in the

south.

Cargills Food City SUPeRMARKeT

h8am-10pm) One of several large supermar-

kets on the main road, this place has traveller

supplies and a pharmacy.

Vijitha Yapa Bookshop BOOKS

(78 Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha; h9am-6pm

Mon-Sat) Good selection of novels, maga-

zines, maps and guidebooks.
