Children diagnosed with ADHD have been found to have low
levels of omega-3 fats in their cells. Omega-3 fatty acids — par-
ticularly EPA and DHA — are key components in the brain and
are central to neurological function and visual acuity. Studies
show low omega-3 levels correlate with poor behavior scores
and teacher scores of academic abilities.
This is due not only to lack of omega-3 fats in the diet, but may
also be the result of having trans fats in the diet, which could
displace omega-3 fats in cells. Trans fats come from hydro-
genated and partially hydrogenated oils found in many food
products, especially junk food. In addition, excess intake of
omega-6 fats from common vegetable oils can result in low
omega-3 levels in the body. Since most children don’t eat foods
containing omega-3 fats, taking an EPA fish oil supplement may
be essential.

A variety of over-the-counter and prescription drugs can impair
brain function. Many of these drugs won’t give obvious symptoms
that your brain is adversely affected. Alcohol can depress brain func-
tion, although in small amounts it can improve social activity — this
may be a great thing for the brain. Balance is key — if a small amount
of alcohol makes you feel bad after drinking it, especially if you don’t
feel right the next morning as well, it’s best avoided.


Brain Waves
The brain generates electrical activity that when measured results in
waves of different frequencies and amplitudes depending upon the
level of consciousness, balance of neurotransmitters, and overall nor-
mal or abnormal function. Sensation, attention (self-awareness), intel-
lectual activity and the planning of physical movement have distinct
electrical correlates in the brain that can be measured with a device
called an EEG (electroencephalogram).
