Thewordkāfar,whichwascrucialtothelastlineofSanā’ī’spoeminitspairingwith
Allāhuakbar,occursonlythriceinḤāfiẓ,twiceinthephrasekāfar-i‛ishq,thoughnot
asarhyme,andnotaspartofanAlbatopos.AllāhuakbardoesoccuronceinḤāfiẓ
(ghazal40:9),butnotinassociationwiththemuezzin’scall;rather,withacompar-
isonbasedonKhiḍrandtheSpringofLife,whosewatersoriginateindarkness
(ẓulumāt),tothewatersoftheAllāhuAkbarspringinShīrāz.
Theonlyotherpotentiallydistinctivewordfromthispoemwhichmightpossibly
collocatewiththemotifofthelovers’trystistheword‘lot’(naṣīb),whichḤāfiẓuses
onlyfourtimes,andonlyonceinthisamorouscontext(156:3):


Ravāmadārkhudāyākidarḥarīm-iviṣāl
raqībmaḥramuḥirmānnaṣīb-imanbāshad.

OGod,inthesanctuaryofuniondonotpermit
Intimacytotherivalandhavedeprivationbemylot.

Thoughthisinvolvesalover’stryst,itisneitherboundedintimebytheeveningor
thedawn,noristhisthemedevelopedintherestoftheghazal.Sohere,again,there
isnofatefulsemiosiswithnaṣib.
What,then,ofthesecondpoemofSanā’ī?‘Myworldandmysoulcametomy
side,/companiontomyheart,comfortofmypsyche’(Āmad bar-i man jahān u
jānam/uns-idilurāḥat-iravānam).Unfortunately,Ḥāfiẓtooknoconsciousnoticeof
thispoem,either;hehasnopoemsinthisrhymeandradīf,andtheonlytrulydis-
tinctivewordinthisshortpoem,besidesmu‘adhdhin(whichaswehavealready
noted,Ḥāfiẓdoesnotuse),isthenightwatchman(pāsibān).Perhapsthenight-
watchmanwillstumbleontoanearlymorninglover’strystinḤāfiẓ,anduncoveran
arrestingAlbasceneforus?
PāsibānappearsonlytwiceinḤāfiẓ,anditssynonym‛asasbutonce(261:5).Of
thesethreeoccurrences,thenightlytrystofloveistwiceimplicated,asfollows:


‛Ishrat-ishabgīrkunbī-tarsk-andarshahr-i‛ishq
shabruvānrāāshnā’ī-hā-stbāmīr-i‛asas.
